Once upon a time… there was you. All your life you’ve heard the other girls talking about their boyfriends. He’s so cute… he’s soooooo sweet… he’s soooooo handsome. Blah. Blah. BLAH. Sometimes it’s made you angry. Jealous. Why isn’t there a boy/guy/young man for you? When will you meet your “prince charming?” It’s Valentine’s Day, and you’re surrounded by flowers and chocolate and romance- but when someone says, “Hey, don’t you have a date for Valentine’s Day?” you just reply with a smile- or a slightly bitter smirk- “Yes, I do, in fact. February 14th.” (Yes, that joke has been used over and over again… I however, advocate recycling. Never refuse to reuse, ladies.)
So. You’re alone on Valentine’s Day (and the rest of the year too), and you’re sad. Lonely. You look at that newlywed couple holding hands, and you ashamedly admit to yourself that you wish someone was holding your hand. When you take that walk downtown, you notice an elderly couple on a park bench- the husband leans down and kisses her cheek, and you think, “Could that be me one day?” Little children pass around their little paper hearts, your friends are all excitedly sharing their date plans, and you feel a little crushed on the inside, even as you proclaim loudly, “I LOVE Valentine’s Day! The candy is finally on sale!”
Or… maybe you’ve seen him. He makes your heart start doing a tap-dance whenever he walks in a room; he has the most beautiful pair of eyes you’ve ever seen; when he talks to you, or says your name (whenever you work up enough courage to actually talk to the guy) it makes you melt into a puddle of sickening sentimentality and sugary mush. You wish he felt the same way… you just want to be with him so badly… but you know it’s not God’s timing. You want to stay focused on God, but it’s so very difficult when he is right there in front of you, and, let’s face it- sometimes God’s presence seems pretty distant and vague. You want to do the dating/courting/relationship thing right, you’re dreaming of a fairytale romance- but it seems so far away. So impossible.
I’m here to tell you something you’ve probably heard a million times before, give or take a couple hundred thousand occasions. Jesus is better! And He is in love with you. So, for a few minutes, let’s forget about our search for Mr. Right; let’s put our struggle to BE Mrs. Right aside for a little bit. Let’s focus on Jesus, the Eternal Prince Charming, the Lover of Your Soul. Jesus is a fairytale prince (except He actually exists!) whether you’ve realized it or not.
Love letters, sonnets, messages of romantic adoration- we all have wanted to receive at least one, just once! What we fail to recognize, or, in many cases, what we choose to ignore, is that we’ve been given a whole Book of love letters from Jesus. He declares His love for us over and over in His Word. Look at how romantic these phrases are:
Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea pleasant. (Song of Solomon 1:16)
How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights! (Song of Solomon 7:6)
I have called thee by name; thou art mine. (Isaiah 43:1)
Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honorable, and I have loved thee. (Isaiah 43:4)
I will not forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands. (Isaiah 49:15-16)
For thy Maker is thine husband; The Lord of hosts is His name. (Isaiah 54:5)
I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. (Jeremiah 31:3)
I go and prepare a place for you. I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:3)
The cliche fairytale that we’ve all dreamed of as little girls can be summed up this way– noble prince on a great white horse slays a terrible dragon, saving a damsel in distress; they fall in love and get married, then proceed to live happily ever after. Satan is referred to as a dragon and a serpent in Scripture. As believers, we know that Satan has been defeated, and that we are freed from this terrible dragon. His power has been subdued, his plans crushed. And by whom? The Prince… on His white horse!
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He doth judge and make war.” (Revelation 19:11)
To top it all off, He loves us so much that He gave up His life to save ours. If that was in a Jane Austen novel, we’d swoon at the tragically romantic beauty of it; why do we brush off the real thing so easily?
Jesus is amazing. No man will ever measure up! A human man could never love us so completely, so greatly! He loves us despite our shortcomings for the sake of love itself; but no matter how perfect any future husband will be for us, he’ll never be so perfect that he’ll always be able to see past our faults. A husband will hurt our feelings at some point- its a human inevitability. But Jesus is always loving, always gentle, and always kind.
Take time to get to know our Jesus intimately. Learn to be so content that, even if your human Mr. Right never comes along, it won’t matter. Fall in love!
