When Rain Falls…

“For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” – Isaiah 55:10-11

Dry. Cracked and broken. So so thirsty- and it seems unquenchable. A thick layer of despair covers your heart and mind like hot sand. You perceive the dull world through lifeless eyes. Your sense of purpose is crumbling away like dirt that has been baked for days in the heat of the relentless, cruel sun. The pain, or loss, or worry stretches on for what seems to be a bitter eternity. Your heart is a desert- barren and empty, and as the weight of that arid void presses down upon you, you feel yourself cracking in all the most painful places. Have you ever been here?

Friends, there is only one cure: water. The words of friends, like a cool breeze, only offer fleeting relief. The kind smiles and pats on your back can only be a limited balm. “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; not withstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?” (James 2:15-16) No, the need is for water. Living Water.

The Author of our Salvation is a brilliant writer. In today’s theme verse, he paints a beautiful picture for us, comparing His Word to rain. Cool, refreshing rain.

Rain is so much more than droplets of water tumbling from a grey sky. Each drop serves as a vehicle for nutrients that are vital for a plant’s growth and well-being; it also serves to clean the air of dust particles, purifying our world. The sound of rainfall is natural music, every splash a beautiful note in a heaven-sent sonata.

Do you see why God compares the Bible to rain? It has the power to quench our thirst, even as we desire more and more of it. It delivers the truths necessary for the growth and health of our souls. When we open our hearts like outspread palms to the falling rain of our Father’s Words, we can feel it wash away the dust and grime that has grown thicker and thicker over time, clearing our hearts and minds. It makes our spirit come alive again. Every sweet reassurance of His love and presence, every moment of conviction and restoration delivers us from the oppressive heat of lost visions and life in sin. It brings us peace such as nothing else can bring. The answer is always God’s Word. He promises that it will never return to Him empty, but will always accomplish His purposes. Praise the Lord for the access we have to His Word!

“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” -John 4:14

“For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.” – Isaiah 44:3
